Sen. Howard Marklein Announces Senate Scholar Program Accepting Applications
State Senator Howard Marklein and the Wisconsin State Senate are now accepting applications for the 2019 Senate Scholar Program.
The Senate Scholar Program is an elite educational program for 33 students, one from each Senate District, to participate in a week-long program at the State Capitol. Interested students must complete an application by November 21, 2018 to be considered. Applications and instructions are available at www.senatescholar.com
“Many high school students from the 17th Senate District have participated in the Senate Scholar Program,” Marklein said. “I strongly believe that this program enhances their understanding of civics and government by providing hands-on, day-to-day experience that cannot be learned in a classroom or by reading a book. I encourage every student who has an interest in government and/or politics to apply.”
The Senate Scholar Program is an advanced government educational program that includes classroom instruction, roundtable discussion sections and a lab component. Experts teach Scholars about constituent relations, research and development of legislation and bill drafting. The Scholars meet with legislative support agency directors and staff, media and lobbyists throughout the week. Scholars staff the Senate floor during legislative session and drafter their own bills and amendments for a mock committee hearing.
