Lack Of Medical Examiners Slows Autopsies

The chief medical examiner for La Crosse County says the nation is seeing a shortage of professionals who can perform autopsies.  Fewer people are entering the field.  The western Wisconsin county has already had 302 deaths outside hospitals which had to be investigated by the seven medical examiners or forensic pathologists on staff and the caseload had increased by 23 percent last year.  In some cases, that has left families waiting to bury a loved one.  Each case can reportedly take anywhere from five-to-12 hours of paperwork and investigation at the scene of the death.
