Explosion Rocks Superior Refinery

An explosion rocked a large refinery in Wisconsin Thursday, injuring several people, a fire official said.

The blast at the Husky Energy oil refinery happened at about 10 a.m. Five people were taken to hospitals in Duluth, Minnesota, Superior Fire Chief Steve Panger told The Associated Press. He doesn’t know the extent of their injuries. Others were walking wounded. There were no known fatalities.

A spokesperson for Essentia Health said 11 people were transported to hospitals in Duluth and Superior. There is no word on the severity of the injuries.

Five victims were taken to St. Mary’s Medical Center, a Level 2 trauma center in Duluth. The spokeswoman said the patients were “awake and alert” when they arrived.

A fire at the refinery reignited during the noon hour, but fire crews were able to get it under control.
