Leonard was born in Badhorn Germany to Hryhory and Olga Nenja in 1946 and immigrated to the United States with his parents in 1950. Leonard lived on a farm outside Grand Marsh, WI for most of his childhood. He graduated Adams-Friendship high school in 1963, attended the University of Wisconsin Madison as an undergraduate, and served 3 years in the Army, including 13 months in Vietnam.
