WIAA Approves Conference Realignment, Will Impact Area Teams Slightly
The South Central Football Conference will no longer exist as we currently know it come 2019. Western Wisconsin football realignment has moved Mauston, Adams-Friendship, Wisconsin Dells, Nekoosa, and Westfield into a new conference (currently known as Conference C). They will be joined in the new conference by Galesville-Ettrick-Trempealeau and Black River Falls. Both those teams had been members of the coulee conference. Tomah and the Mississippi Valley Conference will also be affected by the loss of La Crosse Aquinas who will move into a new conference, leaving the MVC with only 7 teams. This is leaving MVC teams scrambling to find a 9th opponent for the 2019 season.
The WIAA Board of Control approved three conference realignment plans and issued a one-year moratorium on conference realignment requests at its April meeting yesterday.
The Board moved to implement a football-only realignment consideration for southwest Wisconsin that was amended at its January meeting and given initial approval in March. The plan impacts seven conferences and 48 schools, and will be in effect beginning in 2019.
