Two-vehicle Wreck Results in One Fatality
Sheriff John B. Spears reports a two vehicle accident that resulted in one fatality, on February 3rd 2018 at approximately 5:20pm. The accident occurred on State Highway 27 near Melby Dr. just north of Westby, WI in the Town of Christiana.
Chase N. Galle age 22 from Brandon, WI was operating a vehicle southbound on State Highway 27 when he lost control on snow covered roads and crossed the centerline. Galle struck a northbound vehicle operated by Duane T. Skarda age 52 of Pleasant Prairie, WI. Both vehicles came to rest in the northbound lane.
Galle was initially unconscious with serious injuries as a result of the accident and passed away during the transport to Gundersen Health System by Tri-State Ambulance. Skarda was stable but complaining of chest pain and was transported to Gundersen Health System as well and later released. Both drivers were wearing their seatbelts. Airbags were deployed in the Skarda vehicle.
State Highway 27 was closed in both directions for approximately two hours. This marks Vernon County’s 2nd fatal motor vehicle accident in 2018.
Assisting in the accident was the Wisconsin State Patrol, Westby Police Department, Westby Fire Department, Tri-State Ambulance, and the Vernon County Coroner’s Office.
The accident remains under investigations.
