Adams-Friendship School Board Continues Steps Towards Operating Referendum
The Adams-Friendship School Board is taking another step towards an operating referendum at its meeting on Monday night. At its next meeting in January, the board will have two big options to consider: should the district have a recurring referendum or a non-recurring. District Administrator Jim Boebel said with the housing crisis 10 years ago, rural Wisconsin hasn’t recovered economically and the state funding has not recognized that.
“With our revenue caps, we have to then say to our citizens, pose a question and say ‘Would you support if we were to ask for more money?’, said Boebel, “and that in essence is what an operating referendum does. It’s a way for the school to go to its community and say ‘We believe we need this amount of money in order to continue our services in order to continue helping our students perform for life.”
Boebel said if the district doesn’t pass the referendum, they would be in the negative after the 19-20 school year, so it is a need he feels they need to address and come up with solutions to correct it. Part of the problem is declining enrollment. But even with fewer students, Boebel said, the level of student needs keeps increasing. The board will have to approve the question at the January meeting before it gets on the April ballot. If citizens have questions, they can contact Boebel at the district office and there will also be a series of public events where Boebel will speak to citizens and organizations so they can learn more about the referendum.
