Community Strength Training Program for Women in Juneau County

The Juneau County Health Department is partnering with the Aging Disability and Resource Center to offer the StrongWomen Program, an exercise program for middle-aged and older adults. Classes will be offered in Mauston, starting the week of January 8th, 2018. Classes are Monday and Wednesday at the New Lisbon Utilities Center from 11am to Noon. Each class includes progressive weight training, flexibility, and balance activities. Tara Noye, Juneau County Health Department Health Educator is coordinating these programs.

All instructors have been trained in the StrongWomen program and have had personal successes participating and leading strength training classes.

The StrongWomen Program was developed by Miriam Nelson, Ph.D., an associate professor at the Gerald J. and Dorothy R. Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University. The StrongWomen Program is based upon years of research on how strength training and proper nutrition improve the health of women of all ages. “Strength is a critical factor in living healthier, more active lives. Our research shows that a program of strength training not only improves bone density but reduces falls, improves arthritis symptoms, and increases flexibility and strength,” states Dr. Nelson.  The program is appropriate for both sedentary and active women and men.

Results from previous participants indicated they gained physical strength, flexibility, balance and knowledge of nutrition and health. These women have also indicated they have benefited socially from meeting and getting to know new people.

If you are interested in participating in the StrongWomen Program, contact Tara Noye at the Juneau County Health Department for proper paperwork and equipment required for participation.
