Dr. Chris Kirkpatrick Whistleblower Protection Act Passes House; Goes to President’s Desk

The Dr. Chris Kirkpatrick Whistleblower Protection Act passed the House with bipartisan support Thursday. The act is named for a former Tomah VA psychologist who committed suicide after being fired from the VA for questioning veteran over prescription.

Representative Ron Kind said, “Although Dr. Kirkpatrick is no longer with us, today we honored his dedication to serving veterans and his courage to stand up for what was right. By passing the Dr. Chris Kirkpatrick Whistleblower Protection Act we want to ensure that the problems with intimidation and pain management in our VA health care system won’t happen again.”

The bill will enhance penalties for supervisors who retaliate against federal whistleblowers and ensure that workers are aware of whistleblower protections. It already passed the Senate by unanimous consent and will now go to the President to be signed into law.
