Skalak, Darlene Lilly, age 69, of Mauston
Darlene Lilly Skalak, formerly Howland, aged 69 died on Sunday, July 9th, 2017 in her home after bravely enduring a brief battle with an aggressive cancer. Darlene is survived by her daughters Angie Strack (Mauston) Pam/Jeff Deisinger (Mauston) and Toni Seeley (Mauston) and grandchildren Jim Seeley, Andrew Deisinger, Summer Strack, Vincent Seeley and Kristine Deisinger along with many other close family members and friends. Darlene is preceded in death by her parents Fred (1983) and Hazel (2009) Howland, her husband Richard Skalak (2011), her brother Bert (1948) and her sisters Margie (2001) and Kathy (2011).
Darlene was born on May 6th, 1948 as an identical twin with Marlene (or Molly) Southworth to Fred and Hazel Howland. She was married on May 24th, 1969 to Richard J. Skalak. Darlene belonged to St. Paul Lutheran Church in Mauston, WI, where she was very active serving God. She participated in the J.A.M. program for children, Meals on Wheels, and Caring Friends. She was on the communion committee, helped count money after church, and faithfully attended the early morning worship service. Darlene’s faith in Christ was strong, and the only consolation her grieving family can find is that she is now in the loving arms of her Maker, with her family that went before her.
Any given Monday night you could find Darlene (or Dolly or Dede, as she was known at times) at the bingo hall, rarely winning but always having fun. She loved playing cards with her family, regardless of the game – Hearts, Canasta, or Liverpool Rummy – and was all-time scorekeeper. As a devoted Green Bay Packer fan, Darlene owned a share of the team and had the ‘G’ logo tattooed into the back of her scalp and wore it proudly during the season. She loved her grandkids unceasingly, supporting them with every ounce of energy she could give. Love, support, encouragement, and her presence at many sporting events – her grandkids will miss her dearly, as will the rest of her family and friends.
Darlene was an independent spirit yet devoted to her family. She was generous and loving, funny and very stubborn. She spent most of her life making others happy, especially for holiday celebrations. New Year’s Eve, Christmas Eve, and Thanksgiving were celebrated at her house with close and extended family, while Easter was a grand community celebration with the hundred dozen egg hunt on her lawn, woods, and bluff.
Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, July 14, 2017 at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Mauston. Visitation for Darlene will be held from 4-7pm on Thursday, July 13th, at Crandall’s Funeral Home, Mauston. Burial will be at Rose Cemetery.
