Preliminary data from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) indicates 46 people were killed in traffic-related crashes last month. That’s well below the 75 traffic deaths in November of last year and below November’s five-year average of 53. Through November of this year, 555 people have died in Wisconsin traffic crashes including 77 motorcyclists, 56 pedestrians and seven bicyclists. Governor Scott Walker signed Senate Bill 392 into law Thursday. This bill authorizes a municipality to enact an ordinance to authorize the operation of all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) and utility terrain vehicles (UTVs) on certain highways within the territorial boundaries of the municipality. It was authored by Senator Howard Marklein and Representative Todd Novak. Markein said our local leaders should be trusted to make decisions about these issues. They can assess whether a small section of state highway within their municipal boundaries may be safely traveled on an ATV/UTV.
