Protesters Want UW Budget Cuts Restored

Protesters at the various campuses in the University of Wisconsin system say they want the state to restore millions of dollars in budget cuts.  Students, faculty, and staff say they support the system-wide tuition freeze, but the lack of funding is impacting everyone.  They say state funding for the system has been frozen or cut for the last six years.  Instructors say their morale is bad because class sizes and workloads are growing, while salaries stay the same.  Those voicing their support for the system Wednesday are calling for lawmakers to start by covering the money lost when tuitions are frozen. With supporters filling the gallery, a Prairie du Chien principal made his first court appearance Wednesday.  Aaron Amundson is charged with felony child abuse in Crawford County.  While serving as a principal at Bluff View Intermediate School he used a chemical cleaner to remove a swear word on a student’s hand.  The student suffered chemical burns.  Amundson’s attorney says there’s no denying what happened, but the legal argument centers on whether his client was reckless.  Amundson returns to court May 31st when the judge will consider his motion to dismiss the charge. Child Abuse Charges Filed Against Clark County Man

A Neillsville man is charged with felony child abuse after his girlfriend’s infant daughter showed up at a hospital with bruises on her chest and head.  Alden Martin Junior initially told police he was holding the child when its head moved forward, hitting his collarbone sharply.  Martin later said he had put the baby on a bed, went to another room, made a visit to the bathroom, and returned to find the one-month-old on the floor.  Doctors said neither story would explain the child’s injuries, including significant internal bleeding.  Another child in the home told a social services agent the victim had been thrown against a window.
