>>UW System Regents Consider Tuition Hikes At 3 Schools

(Madison, WI)  —  The finance committee for the University of Wisconsin System Board of Regents will vote Thursday on raising tuition at three schools.  Non-resident and graduate students would be affected at U-W-Eau Claire, U-W-Milwaukee and U-W-Stout.  Tuition hikes would range from 296 to 539 dollars each semester.  The final decision on raising tuition rates would be made by the full board at its Friday meeting.

 

>>Body Of Abused Girl Still In Morgue 2 Months Later

(Milwaukee, WI)  —  Two months after an abused 14-year-old Milwaukee girl died, her body remains at the Milwaukee County morgue.  Amina Krouser’s father says he wants her body cremated and her remains sent to him in Texas.  That request has been blocked by the girl’s mother, who says cremation violates her personal and religious beliefs.  The mother is the one accused of causing the teenager’s death from a brain infection.  Azlyza Ababneh is facing charges of child neglect resulting in death, child abuse, intentionally causing harm and three counts of misdemeanor child neglect.  Because she isn’t charged with homicide, she can still determine how the girl’s remains are handled.

 

>>2 Monroe Men Arrested For Having Meth Lab In Apartment

(Monroe, WI)  —  Officers with several law enforcement agencies report the discovery of a meth lab in a Monroe apartment.  A search warrant was executed Monday morning at about 11:00 a-m.  During the search, a substance believed to be meth was discovered, along with the supplies and equipment used to make the drug.  Twenty-year-old Austin Smith and 18-year-old Trevor Smith were arrested.  Authorities say the search took several hours because the operation of a meth lab generates hazardous waste.  Both Monroe men face several drug-related charges.

 

>>Resident’s December Death Earns Penalties For Assisted Living Facility

(Sun Prairie, WI)  —  The Faith Garden Memory Care assisted living center in Sun Prairie has been fined 42-hundred dollars and ordered not to accept any new patients.  The Wisconsin Department of Health reports four deficiencies were found at the facility after an 84-year-old resident died last December.  State officials believe Faith Gardens has failed to provide the supervision needed to ensure all residents were kept safe.  Alice McGaw died of hypothermia when she wandered outside.  The center’s door alarm system wasn’t activated at the time.

 

>>Milwaukee Common Council Rejects Fines For Careless Car Owners

(Milwaukee, WI)  —  A proposal to fine people who leave their cars running with the keys inside on their own property has been rejected in Milwaukee.  The Common Counsel voted the idea down by a 13-to-two vote Tuesday.  The Public Safety and Health Committee had approved the idea last month.  The new ordinance would have more than tripled the existing fine for cars which are left running on public property.  Alderman Terry Witkowski introduced the proposal which would have penalized vehicle owners who did the same thing in their driveways or parking lots

 

>>Fall Creek Teacher Facing Sex Charge Makes 1st Court Appearance

(Eau Claire, WI)  —  A Fall Creek teacher is charged with sexual assault for allegedly having sexual contact with a woman who was drunk.  Joshua Tumm made his initial appearance in Eau Claire County Court Tuesday.  Investigators say Tumm offered to give the woman a ride home December 28th, but took her to his home instead.  Her husband found her with Tumm, in the backseat of the teacher’s truck, partially unclothed.  Tumm admitted the sexual contact and the woman says she didn’t consent.  He is on paid administrative leave with a preliminary hearing set for March 6th.
