“Outdoors Radio” Receives Nine Awards at Outdoor Writers of America Association Excellence in Craft Competition

Mauston – The popular radio show, “Outdoors Radio,” with co-hosts Dan Small and Jeff Kelm, won a total of nine awards in the annual Outdoor Writers of America Association Excellence in Craft competition. The awards were announced at the association’s recent conference, held in Duluth, Minn. The winning segments all aired during the 2016 season, the 12th season of “Outdoors Radio.”

Kelm won first place awards in two categories: Hunting & Shooting Sports and Gear/Technical, with “Training a Deaf Dog to Hunt,” an interview with Michelle Milford about her experience in training a deaf English setter named Clyde; and “Treadwright Tires,” an interview with Treadwright CEO Anthony Showen.

Kelm also won third place awards in those same categories with “A Bowhunt to Remember: Great Hunt, But No Deer,” an account of his exciting early-season bowhunt; and “Hunt Wisconsin App,” an interview with app creator David Manske.

Small won three second place awards in the Hunting/Shooting Sports, Gear/Technical and Fishing categories for “Recovering Lost Deer with a Trained Dog,” an interview with dog trainer Jeremy Moore; “Man Overboard,” an interview with Christian Frost Roine, the inventor of a remote kill switch for outboard motors; and “Collecting Antique Lures,” an interview with lure collectors Dan Basore.

Small also won two third place awards in the Conservation/Nature and Family Participation/Youth Outdoor Education categories for “Woodcock Research,” an interview with Ruffed Grouse Society regional biologist Andy Welk; and “Squirrels Unlimited,” an interview with Squirrels Unlimited founder Joe Wilson.

“Outdoors Radio” is recorded at Smash Country WRJC in Mauston. The show airs on a total of 13 stations around the state and is available as a podcast on iTunes and www.lake-link.com/dsoradio.
