Madison Man Charged with OWI-5th Offense
A Madison man has been charged with OWI-5th Offense. 30-year-old Skyler Shegonee was also charged with reckless driving causing injury and operating a motor vehicle while revoked. According to the criminal complaint:
On July 28, 2017, officials were informed of a vehicle accident near the canoe landing with Buckhorn State Park in the Town of Germantown. Once on scene officials observed a burgundy van which had clearly struck a tree. The tree was bent over and the front of the van was elevated and resting on the tree. One witness said she wanted to hang out with her friend, and Shegonee drove his van to her house, where they were picked up to go to the park to go canoeing. She stated it appeared that Shegonee had been drinking when they were being picked up but didn’t think it was an issue. She explained that Shegonee and her friend were just coming back from the park office because they needed canoe paddles. She and other three others were standing near the canoe landing when the accident happened. She said the van was going about 30mph at the time of the crash and it appeared that the accident was on purpose. After the accident, she said, that Shegonee exited the vehicle, told his daughter and niece that they had to leave and they started walking the down the road away from the accident. Another witness stated he was the front passenger in the van when it crashed. Officials located Shegonee and brought him back to the scene of the accident. Shegonee made it sound like it was the first time he saw the van and that he did not know what happened. He admitted to drinking a few beers but denied driving the van. Shegonee’s daughter told officials that Shegonee had been driving. Shegonee adamantly denied driving the vehicle. He then said he drove the van into the park, but denied getting into the accident. Due to evidence and the interviews, officials believed that Shegonee was the driver and asked Shegonee to perform field sobriety tests, which he stated no. Shegonee was arrested and taken to the Juneau County Jail.
Court records show a $7,500 signature bond was set for Shegonee and he is to maintain absolute sobriety at all times. He is also not to frequent any bars, taverns, or establishments that sell alcohol or possess any alcohol. An initial appearance is scheduled for August 23 at 9am at the Juneau County Justice Center.
