Hatch Public Library to Host Betsy Grant Sept. 6
Hatch Public Library will host Betsy Grant, wife to late Vietnam era cartoonist, Vernon Grant Wednesday, September 6. Betsy, a Wisconsin Dells native, will be appearing at 1 pm to speak about the life and art of Vernon Grant and the two books she has published of his military cartoons , in “Adventures of Point-Man Palmer in Vietnam” and “STAND-BY ONE!”
Betsy met Vernon while studying at Sophia University in Tokyo, Japan. Vernon delighted audiences with his cartoons since early childhood. Born in 1935, he volunteered to serve in the US Army from 1958 to 1968.
Vernon Grant’s story about U.S. Army life in the 1960s is in “ Adventures of Point-Man Palmer in Vietnam” . Illustrations in the book includes Vernon’s biography, cartoons drawn for the Pacific Stars and Stripes as well as the graphic novel “Point-Man Palmer and His Girlfriend “Invisible Peppermint” Vietnam”. The second book,“STAND-BY ONE!” , is a book of single panel jokes told with Vernon’s dry sense of humor.
Vernon was a pioneering Vietnam War cartoonist, creating two Point-Man Palmer graphic novels and STAND-BY ONE!. Vernon introduced “Kaiju” (monsters) to America in his book “A Monster is Loose!-In Tokyo. Grant “was the first American artist consciously incorporating the influence of manga ( Japanese comics) into his own work.” ( Stephen BisseLe, #23 Monster! Oct. 2015 )Vernon also drew seven science fiction issues of The Love Rangers portrayed a future world striving for peace.
Betsy Grant will explain how Vernon used humor to represent a number of the experiences of the American soldier in Vietnam, as well as how a soldier should conduct himself. She will welcome comments by Vietnam veterans who attend about their experiences.
