Delegation from Kazakhstan in Mauston to Share Experience Through Open World Program September 29 – October 8, 2017

(MAUSTON, Wisconsin) – An Open World delegation from Kazakhstan arrives in Mauston on Friday, September 29th for a week long program to promote mutual understanding between Kazakhstan environmental educators and their Western Wisconsin counterparts. Hosted by UW Extension Juneau County in Mauston, the Open World delegates will explore best practices in environmental sustainability. This exchange continues the ongoing relationship between Juneau County and Kazakhstan.

Managed by the independent Open World Leadership Center, Open World is designed to enhance understanding and capabilities for cooperation between the United States and the countries of Eurasia and the Baltic States by developing a network of leaders in the region who have gained significant, firsthand exposure to America’s democratic, accountable government and free-market system. Funded almost entirely by the U.S. Congress, Open World links Members of Congress to Eurasian leaders and is an instrument for Americans engaged in citizen diplomacy.

The Kazakhstan participants will meet with civic activists, environmental educators, and government officials who share a commitment to public support for ecological rehabilitation of the environment. UW Extension has planned meetings with local schools to explore integration of environmental education curriculum. The delegation will visit Necedah National Wildlife Refuge and participate in a seminar at the Treehaven Nature Reserve in Tomahawk.

The delegation includes:

Damir Rinatovich Karimov – Eco-Trainer – Republican Public Union “PosadiDerevo.KZ”, Karaganda

Dana Akhmetova – Teacher – Kazakhstan-American Free University, Ust-Kamenogorsk

Guldana Ixatova – Lawyer – River Plus LLP, Pavlodar

Mikhail Kim – Project Manager, Human Health Institute, Astana

Mikhit Suttibayev – Public Relations Specialist – Association for the Conservation of Biodiversity of Kazakhstan, Astana

The delegation is joined by an English speaking escort Marzhan Srymova from Astana who is a Scientific Affairs Assistant, U.S. Embassy Astana.

Home stays allow the Open World delegates to experience American family life. Host family volunteers from the Mauston area have the opportunity to learn more about life in Kazakhstan today and share American traditions. Cultural experiences during the week include a visit to Madison.

The congressionally sponsored Open World program brings emerging leaders from participating countries to the United States in order to give them firsthand exposure to the American system of participatory democracy and free enterprise. The program allows American leaders and their counterparts from Russia, Ukraine, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kosovo, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Mongolia, Serbia, Tajikistan, Turkey, and Turkmenistan to engage constructively with one another in a manner that complements the U.S. Congress’s public diplomacy efforts on timely issues such as accountable governance, human–trafficking prevention, young leadership development, and rule of law. Today, Open World has nearly 25,000 alumni and a network of 7,500 U.S. host families.
