Viroqua Man Injured in Motorcycle Accident
A Viroqua motorcyclist was injured in a crash in the Town of Webster, Vernon County Thursday morning. 24-year-old Clayton A. Gatewood was operating his motorcycle east on State Highway 82 when he came over a knoll, right in front of the Webster Town Hall ,and saw a large piece of equipment known as a chips spreader in front of him making a right hand turn onto County Road SS. Gatewood stated that he started to brake to avoid running in to the back of the chips spreader, but was unable to stop, and collided into the back end of the chips spreader. Gatewood was ejected from the motorcycle, and slid down the roadway, before coming to a stop in the east-bound ditch area. The motorcycle kept sliding down the roadway and struck the rear of the chips spreader, before coming to a final rest on the roadway. Gatewood was injured, and the only occupant on the motorcycle at the time of the accident, He was also wearing protective clothing and a helmet. The operator of the equipment was 64-year-old John W. Udelhoven of Boscobel. Udelhoven had just pulled out of the parking lot of the Webster Town Hall and was heading East on State Highway 82 when he was struck from behind by the motorcycle. Mr. Udelhoven was not injured in the accident. Assisting at the accident scene was the LaFarge Fire Department, and La Farge EMS. The accident is still under investigation by the Vernon County Sheriff’s Office
