Detective Rick Lueneberg Sworn in at Common Council Meeting

(Left to Right) City Administrator Nathan Thiel with newly sworn in Detective Rick Lueneburg, and Mauston Police Chief Mike Zilisch.

A Mauston Police Detective took the oath of office in front of family and friends at the Mauston Common Council meeting on Tuesday night. Officer Rick Lueneburg has been with the Mauston Police Department for 12 years and was promoted to the position. Mauston Police Chief Mike Zilisch say Lueneberg has earned his new title and position with hard work, dedication to the city and the Mauston community. Zilisch then presented Lueneberg with his badge and was sworn in by City Administrator Nathan Thiel.

After the oath of office, the council then discussed with Mauston Fire Chief Kim Hale about the fire station space needs. Thiel said that MSA prepared some preliminary budgets on what potential costs could be based on space needs. One was the full fire station space needs and it came in at $2.8-$3.5 million. The other one had trimmed some items from the first one, which came in at $2.3-$2.8 million. Originally, when the city did the RFP, they envisioned a project with construction costs of $2 to $2.5 million. Thiel said the building committee had identified future needs and wanted to build towards the future. Hale said the committee wanted to know where the council stood and what they are looking at before the committee continued to hash things out. Thiel also pointed out that the higher end costs option was not talking about a brick facade, but rather a metal building with limited masonry work. Council Member Francis McCoy said it really is about what the city can afford. If the city has the money, McCoy said, he had no problem spending more, but the money needs to be there. Mayor Brian McGuire said the building committee had looked at other fire stations to compare with and see what is needed. Hale said he would like to see a building that they could add on in the most cost effective way in the future. One building committee member said he would just as soon wait until the money is there before building the station. There wasn’t action taken on the item, but Thiel said he wanted to bring it to the council to discuss and review the situation and not make a quick minute decision, while the building committee continues to work on it.
