Adams County Sheriff’s Office: Beware of ‘Make-a-Wish’ Scam

The Adams County Sheriff’s Office is warning of a new scam that is making its way across the country using the name of the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Con artists holding out as government officials from the “Federal Trade Commission” or the fake “Consumer Protection Agency” are calling people to tell them that they have won a cash sweepstakes through the Make-a-Wish Foundation, a national charity for sick children. To claim the prize, scammers tell the “winners” that they must first fork over thousands of dollars to cover processing fees. The sheriff’s office said in a Facebook post, the scammers will offer to lend the money to pay the fee, and that they need just the “winner’s” bank account information to wire it them. The caller even gives a fake phone number to verify that the sweepstakes is real, according to the sheriff’s office. Officials want the public to know the Make-a-Wish Foundation does not conduct sweepstakes competitions. For more information on this scam, go to the Federal Trade Commission’s website and wish.org.
