>>Governor “Optimistic” About Juvenile Corrections Overhaul Passage
(Madison, WI) — Governor Scott Walker says he’s told legislative leaders it is important to pass a major overhaul of the state’s juvenile corrections system this year. Senator Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald has questioned whether that could be accomplished by the time the legislative session ends in mid-March. Walker told reporters Wednesday he is still optimistic. He wants the Lincoln Hills School for Boys and Copper Lake School for Girls to be closed, with inmates moved to smaller facilities around Wisconsin. The youth prison in Irma has been involved in several federal lawsuits. There have been allegations of abuse of inmates and unsafe working conditions for staff members. A committee hearing on the overhaul is being held today at the state Capitol.
>>Teen Accused Of Stabbing Mother’s Boyfriend In Back
(Madison, WI) — A 53-year-old Madison man is expected to recover after being stabbed in the back several times. Madison Police arrested 19-year-old Eric T. Scott after what police are calling a domestic incident. Scott is the son of the victim’s girlfriend. The incident happened Tuesday at about 11:00 P-M. The victim’s name hasn’t been released. Tentative charges against the younger man are second-degree recklessly endangering safety, domestic criminal damage to property and domestic disorderly conduct. The man who was stabbed was treated and released at a Madison hospital.
>>Attorneys With Experience Before Supreme Court Brought On Board
(Washington, DC) — The team of lawyers representing convicted killer Brendan Dassey is partnering with attorneys who are experienced presenting arguments to the U-S Supreme Court. Dassey’s 2005 confession to the murder of photographer Teresa Halbach is being challenged. The nation’s high court has been asked to review a decision from the Seventh U-S Circuit Court of Appeals. Dassey and his uncle, Steven Avery, are serving life sentences for the killing in Manitowoc County when Dassey was 16. A brief is to be filed within the next few days.
>>Crandon Principal’s Departure Has Students, Parents Demanding Answers
(Crandon, WI) — Parents and students in the Crandon School District are demanding answers about the departure of a well-liked principal. After 20 years with the district, Andy Space resigned January 26th. Questions are being asked, but no answers have been forthcoming. The school board voted to accept a resignation agreement with Space earlier this week. The principal had been told his contract wouldn’t be renewed last month. Two-and-a-half weeks later he left. The school board meeting where the situation was discussed drew a crowd of almost 200 people. School officials say they can’t legally share details about a personnel decision. There has been no indication of any wrongdoing by the veteran educator.
