Elections Officials Question TV Reports System Was Hacked

(Madison, WI)  —  The Wisconsin Elections Commission says it has never detected a successful hacking attempt on its systems and the Department of Homeland Security hasn’t notified it about one.  N-B-C Nightly News has reported Wisconsin was one of seven states hacked by Russian operatives before the November 2016 election.  The commission released its statement Tuesday in response to the report.  It says there were scanning attempts that year, but no indications of any activity since September.  Commission members say they believe the D-H-S when it says the Wisconsin systems are secure.

 

>>Milwaukee To Intervene In $140M Power Project For Foxconn

(Milwaukee, WI)  —  The Common Council has directed the city attorney to intervene on behalf of Milwaukee when a 140-million dollar power project goes before the Wisconsin Public Service Commission.  American Transmission Company wants to run high-voltage lines to a new substation near the Foxconn campus in Mount Pleasant.  The huge electronics manufacturing plant is expected to draw six times as much electrical power as any other Wisconsin factory.  The Common Council is trying to make sure Milwaukee residents don’t see their electrical service rates go up to pay for it.  Alderman Robert Bauman questions the need for more Foxconn subsidies.

 

>>Senator Alberta Darling:  Juvenile Justice Overhaul Bill Could Pass

(Madison, WI)  —  With former critics like the Wisconsin Counties Association and two groups representing the state’s sheriffs now in support, a key Republican says the juvenile justice overhaul bill could pass the Senate.  Republican Alberta Darling says senators need to feel they’re involved in the process, are comfortable with the 80-million dollar cost, and are convinced the approach will reduce recidivism and improve public safety.  A hearing on closing the troubled Lincoln Hills juvenile prison was held Tuesday.  Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald has expressed concerns with the legislation — but also said it could win Senate approval.

 

>>Witnesses Described Milwaukee Arrest Scene

(Milwaukee, WI)  —  Witnesses say D-E-A agents and local police officers surrounded a car near the Milwaukee Public Market Tuesday, breaking out windows and pulling people out of that vehicle.  Agents wearing marked Drug Enforcement Agency jackets joined Milwaukee Police in removing brown paper bags from the car.  Those witnesses say they heard loud noises from outside and watched through windows as the scene unfolded.  Several of the occupants of that car were taken into custody.  There were no reports of injuries or shots fired.

 

>>Onalaska Man Makes 1st Court Appearance In Wife’s Death

(La Crosse, WI)  —  A 58-year-old Onalaska man is scheduled to return to La Crosse County court next month as he faces charges in his wife’s death.  So far, all of the charges against Shawn Docken are drug-related.  Docken and his 33-year-old wife, Jessica, allegedly snorted heroin the morning of February 21st.  Shawn Docken left the room and his 28-year-old son Matthew found his stepmother slumped over later.  They called 9-1-1 and Jessica Docken died the next day at a La Crosse hospital.  Shawn Docken is still being held in the La Crosse County Jail.  He made an initial court appearance Tuesday.
