Monkeypox Investigation
Continues in Wisconsin
The Wisconsin Division of Public Health (WDPH) says its investigation is continuing into the Moneypox outbreak in the state. As of the middle of June, 2003 there were seven confirmed cases, and thirty-four suspected cases.
WDPH Bureau of Communicable Diseases Director Herb Bostrom says some of the suspected cases may not turn out to be actual Monkeypox. He says more people may be reporting what they think are Monekypox symptoms due to heightened awareness.
"It is now the job of public health to determine if any of these individuals could actually have been exposed to monkeypox, " Bostrom stated.
WDPH continues to work closely with local health departments, the Wisconsin Department opf Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP), the centrs for Disease Control and Prevention, and other states on the monkepox outbreak.
"To do a thorough job, public officials must investigate any possible case where an individual shows symptoms and may have been exposed recently to either prarie dogs or suspect human cases," said Bostrom.
"Thorough follow-up on all suspected cases is essential to control and prevent the spread of this disease," he says.
The Division of Public Health has been following two health care workers who may have contacted monkeypox from their human patients. Friday the thirteenth of June, Dr. Jeffrey Davis, State Epidemiologist, reported that the health care workers illness was very unlikely to be monkeypox, because their symptoms were not typical of mokeypox. Preliminary laboratory results from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are negative for monkeypox virus, making it even less likely that these health care workers are infected.
To completely rule out monkeypox infections, the Division of Public Health awaits additional laboratory results.
