100 GREATEST ONE-HIT WONDERS NAMED
Los Del Rio's dance smash
"Macarena" tops the list
"Macarena" -- by a couple of middle-aged Spanish flamenco performers known as Los Del Rio -- begat a dance craze not seen since the days of "The Twist." In fact, their song was so infectious that even stiff-as-a-board Al Gore got into it at the 1996 Democratic National Convention.
VH1's "100 Greatest One-Hit Wonders" represents those single songs that enjoyed chart success or had a lasting impact on the music scene or society at large.
It features new interviews with Alice Cooper, Nile Rodgers, The B-52s' Kate Pierson, Isaac Hayes, Henry Rollins, "Weird Al" Yankovic and Brandy, plus celebrities like magicians Penn & Teller, and deejay Ed Lover; critics and writers Rob Sheffield, Danyel Smith, Lorraine Ali and Legs McNeil; and VH1's own Zeke Piestrup and Aamer Haleem.
After "Macarena," the list includes Soft Cell's "Tainted Love" and "Come On Eileen" by Dexy's Midnight Runners. Right Said Fred's "I'm Too Sexy" comes in No.4, "Mickey" by Toni Basil is fifth, and No.6 is "Who Let The Dogs Out" by Baha Men. Rounding out the top 10 are "Ice Ice Baby" by Vanilla Ice, "Take On Me" by A-Ha, "Rico Suave" by Geraldo and "99 Luftballoons" by Nena.
