DEMOCRATS WIN IN
THREE SPECIAL ELECTIONS

MADISON – Democrats won in three separate special elections April 29th, holding on to their position in the state Senate and Assembly.  One of the races was in the 24th Senate District in
Wood, Portage, Waushara and Adams counties where Julie Lassa, Plover was victorious in what started out to be a controversial bid (See PAGE TWO and RESIGNATION).

Linda Honold, Chair of the Democratic Party of Wisconsin,  offered congratulations to the victorious candidates and reiterated the Democrats commitment to winning special elections.

“Democrats scored three very important victories yesterday and all three candidates deserve to be commended for well run campaigns. The Democratic Party of Wisconsin takes each and every special election very seriously, especially when we’re they involve seats previously held by Democrats,” said Honold. “In the coming months there will be two more special elections and we are committed to winning both of those races.”

Democratic victories included:  7th Senate District -- Jeff Plale -- State Representative Jeff Plale will replace former Sen. Richard Grobschmidt. Plale won with 71 percent of the vote.  24th Senate District – Julie Lassa – State Representative Julie Lassa will replace former Sen. Kevin Shibilski. Lassa won with 62 percent of the vote over Republican Donna Rozar.  18th Assembly District – Lena Taylor – Lena Taylor ran unopposed and will succeed former State Representative Antonio Riley.

“The Democratic Party of Wisconsin is thrilled with each of these new legislators.  Jeff and Julie will be important members of the Senate and Lena will be a valuable member of the State Assembly,” said Honold. “With the extreme leadership of the Republican party in this state every seat in the State Assembly and Senate is critical to Democrats.”

The election of Plale and Lassa has created openings for their Assembly seats in South Milwaukee and Stevens Point. Governor Jim Doyle will now have to set a date for elections for both seats.

Shibilski to be union lobbyist

The 24th District State Senate seat recently won by Julie Lassa of Plover became vacant when Senator Kevin Shibilski resigned to become Secretary of the Department of Tourism under new Governor Jim Doyle.  However, after spending a brief amount of time at the Tourism job, Shibilski resigned.

The lastest word is that Shibilski has decided to take a job with the Teamsters Union.  Shibilski says one of his responsibilities  will involve public affairs.  He says he was offered the job of Public Affairs Director.  Meanwhile, a union spokesperson says Shibilski will be the union's lobbyist, replacing former governor Marty Schreiber.  The job reportedly pays one-third the salary Shibilski was making as Tourism Secretary.
